Boxing on TV tonight as Canelo Alvarez takes on Callum Smith
Canelo Alvarez's much-anticipated return to the ring against Liverpool-born Callum Smith takes place in Dallas tonight.
Alvarez is back in action for the first time since knocking out Sergey Kovalev in November last year in Las Vegas to win the WBO light heavyweight title.
He will face tough opposition in the undefeated WBA super middleweight champion in Smith, who has defended the titles twice – stopping Hassan N’Dam in New York in June 2019 and then beating John Ryder in his hometown five months later.
The winner tonight can legitimately claim to be the best 168lb fighter in the world – and we have everything you need to know about the fight right here…
Callum Smith claims he can write his name in history by beating Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Smith knows defeating pound-for-pound king Alvarez in the Alamodome in San Antonio in the early hours of Sunday would go down as one of the best wins by a British fighter.
“That is motivating,” the WBA Super super-middleweight king told Mirror Sport. “We all want to be in fights and have wins that people remember.
“People don’t remember your voluntary defences or the ones you’re expected to win.
“Joe Calzaghe had about 20 defences, but it was the Jeff Lacy one, the Mikkel Kessler one he’s remembered for, not all the ones in between.
“This is a big one for me and it doesn’t get any bigger for me in my weight division. In my division and around my weight division, the biggest is Canelo Alvarez.
“I’m going to do all I can to get it over the line and write my name in history. If I won, people would still be talking about it in 30 or 40 years’ time.”
