Conor McGregor calls out PSG star Neymar as he eyes Charles Oliveira title fight

UFC icon Conor McGregor has taken aim at Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar and vowed to ‘smoke’ both the Brazilian and his compatriot Charles Oliveira.

McGregor is currently rehabilitating from his broken leg suffered against Dustin Poirier in July last year, with the Irishman losing via TKO in the first round.

He called out Oliveira for an immediate title shot on his return, and McGregor is reportedly confident he can return to his dominant self to reclaim the lightweight title.

McGregor took to Instagram to call for the clash with Oliveira, posting a photo of the Brazilian and Neymar along with the caption: “Smoke the two of these!”

‘The Notorious’ also posted a promo for the fight as ‘McGregor vs Brazil 3’, referencing his wins over Diego Brandao in 2014 and Jose Aldo in 2015. The win over Aldo unified the featherweight division.

Neymar was with Oliveira after he successfully defended his lightweight title over McGregor’s arch-rival, Poirier, with a third-round submission.

Oliveira posted the image on Instagram along with a message of gratitude for the PSG star’s support: “Thank you my friend for all the affection and cheering. God always bless you and lighten.

“Let’s go with everything always towards the top.”

Neymar is perhaps the biggest and most popular sports star in Brazil, scoring 70 goals in 116 appearances for the national team – a tally that trails just the legendary Pele in all-time scoring charts.

The Brazilian won the Champions League during his time with Barcelona before switching to Paris for a world record £198million.

He is also considered the third highest-paid footballer in the world, which undoubtedly attracts the attention of McGregor, who ranked third in the fighting rich-list for 2021 having earned £30m for his two defeats to Poirier.

After struggling for form in recent years, McGregor is likely third in line for a title shot behind Justin Gaethje and the winner of the upcoming bout between Islam Makhachev and Beneil Dairush.

Oliveira has had his say on proceedings, calling for McGregor and suggesting he does not consider Gaethje a real threat.

“May would be a wonderful date. Conor challenged me asking a date, and tweeted Ireland vs. Brazil 3," the Brazilian told Sherdog. “Not only him, but also myself and all the world wants to see that fight. So let's make it happen. I'm waiting for him in May.

“It may be in welterweight, lightweight or middleweight, with my title on the line or not. Just choose and I'll be ready.

“Gaethje was knocked out by Poirier, who I just submitted. He was almost knocked out by Chandler, who I beat via TKO.”
