Ex-UFC star Brendan Schaub saves kids after ‘dad kills mum driving into traffic’
Retired UFC fighter Brendan Schaub has claimed to have heroically saved three kids from a major car accident in Los Angeles last week.
The accident, currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, took place on the 101 Freeway in Encino on August 12.
According to reports from the Los Angeles District Attorney, 31-year-old Cesar Iban Torres was travelling with his girlfriend, Aimee Garcia, and their four children, all between the ages of 1 and 7.
During their journey, Torres reportedly turned his 2003 Lincoln Navigator SUV onto the wrong side of the freeway and deliberately crashed into an 18-wheel truck, hoping to kill his girlfriend and children.
Schaub, who has since started a successful career as a comedian, explained on a recent episode of his The Fighter and The Kid podcast that he was driving down the freeway with his fiancee, Joanna Zanella, when he came across the accident.
While he initially considered continuing on with his journey, Schaub said he quickly realised that it wasn’t just an ordinary car collision.
“There’s a 6 or 7-year-old on top of the car [waving for help], yelling for help and I’m like, ‘Babe, that’s a f***ing kid. She’s like, ‘Just keep going,’ and I’m like no, it’s a kid," Schaub said.
“Then he’s pointing down and I look in and there’s two other kids in the car.
“The car’s all f***ing mangled, and there’s one other guy there who’s on the scene, maybe it’s the truck driver, I’m not sure, but me and him are the first ones on the scene.
“There’s two kids and there’s a bigger kid and he keeps going, ‘I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die,’ and I go, ‘You’re not going to die, buddy, you’re not going to die.’”
Schaub went on to explain that he was able to break open the door with the help of another bystander and carry two of the children to safety.
Moments later, Schaub was visibly fighting back the tears as he claimed he checked the front of the car and saw their mother, Aimee Garcia, who had tragically passed away at the scene.
“I look and in the front is a lady who passed away,” Schaub described.
“Brain matter everywhere, blood everywhere, and the kid’s going ‘mama, mama.’
“I go, ‘Bubba, look at me, don’t look over there’ because he was so young, it would have completely f***ed him up. So I go, ‘Look at me, don’t look over there, look at me.’”
Since the accident, Torres has been charged with murder, attempted murder, child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest after he attempted to flee from the scene of the crime.
While the California Highway Patrol has not confirmed Schaub’s heroic involvement in the accident, they are continuing their investigation after Torres was arraigned earlier this week.
On top of his heroic actions at the scene of the accident, Schaub has also raised awareness for the GoFundMe page made to pay tribute to the victim Garcia, sharing the fundraiser with his 1.2m Instagram followers.
