Floyd Mayweather's best pound-for-pound boxer? It's NOT Canelo
Canelo who?! Floyd Mayweather SNUBS undisputed super-middleweight champion Saul Alvarez as best pound-for-pound boxer in the world… choosing ‘hell of a fighter’ Terence Crawford instead
- Floyd Mayweather doesn’t think Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world
- The boxing legend instead claimed that Terence Crawford deserves the title
- Mayweather said Crawford is ‘a hell of a fighter’ who has ‘a lot of raw talent’
Floyd Mayweather has dismissed Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, instead claiming Terence Crawford deserves that title.
Both Canelo and Crawford are two of the hottest prospects in world boxing right now.
Alvarez knocked out Caleb Plant earlier this month in Las Vegas to become the undisputed super-middleweight world champion, while just five days ago Crawford beat Shawn Porter into retirement after his tenth-round technical knockout victory.

Crawford, 34, remains undefeated after 38 fights, while Canelo’s only defeat in 60 bouts came at the hands of Mayweather.
And Pretty Boy Floyd was unequivocal in his opinion on the current world’s best fighter.
‘The pound-for-pound top fighter right now is Terence Crawford,’ Mayweather told Fight Hype. ‘Everything about life is about time and patience.
Mayweather called Crawford ‘a hell of fighter’ who reminded him of himself in his early days
‘And Crawford I just truly believe that he doesn’t have to be under my company for me to give him praise, I am not like that. If he is ever a free agent and he would like to go to any company I would love to work with him.
‘Because I know what I can do to take him to that next level as he has a lot of raw talent and he is a hell of a fighter.’
Mayweather’s comments are likely to cause a huge stir in the boxing community, which continues to celebrate Canelo as the sport’s best.
Crawford’s tenth-round victory over rival Shawn Porter sent him into a shock retirement
The Mexican’s defeat of Plant was his fourth fight in less than 12 months, in which time he moved up to fight at 168lbs and also beat ex-champions Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders to unify the welterweight belts.
Alvarez has been world champion at four different weight divisions and is now making a shock step up to cruiserweight to fight Ilunga Makabu.
Mayweather made a subtle acknowledgement of Canelo but still backed Crawford as the best.
‘There is a lot of great fighters out there but he (Crawford) is a mother******, and one thing I like about him he reminds me of a young Floyd Mayweather,’ he said.
Canelo’s victory over Caleb Plant made him the undisputed super-middleweight champion
‘He can fight his ass off and that’s what I like about him, but he is a lot older than I was when he started getting praise because I fought for a world title when my career began blossoming.’
Crawford has also won plenty of titles across his career, having been crowned world champion in three weight divisions. He was undisputed light welterweight champion in 2017 and has held the WBO welterweight belt since 2018.
Crawford’s defeat of Porter has teed up a hugely anticipated super-fight against Errol Spence Jr.
