Khabib Nurmagomedov laughs off wild reports he was attacked by fan with knife

UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov has laughed off reports that he was attacked by a fan with a knife when recently promoting his MMA Eagle Fighting Championship in Russia.

Nurmagomedov was in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod promoting the Championship, when footage emerged of a young boy running towards the 32-year-old as he walked past with his security.

Many believe the encounter was just an adoring young fan wanting to get close to his sporting idol, however a small number of reports claimed that the youngster approached the UFC star with a knife.

In spite of this when asked about the confrontation, Nurmagomedov was quick to brush off claims of the knife attack, instead insisting the youngster just wanted a picture with him.

Laughing about the encounter he said: “He wanted a photo but he tripped, we took a photo [in the end].”

"When asked about the knife claims, the 32-year-old added: “Not at all, at least I hope not. It was just a fan who wasn’t let in.

"He saw me leaving and ran up to me. He tripped but I didn’t see it. He was behind me. I hope there was no knife.”

The footage that led to the allegations also showed the Russian fighter was limping as he walked through the ‘Hagorny’ sports complex where the event was held.

As a result, the former UFC Lightweight Champion subsequently revealed that the injury came from a training fight with team-mate Zubaira Tukhugov during a session earlier that day, but admitted the injury was not a serious one, and that he was OK.

The Russian commented: “Things like that happen, everything’s OK.”

Following a superb career ‘The Eagle’ retired from actively competing in October last year.

But he has remained active within the sport both coaching fighters such as Islam Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov.

He has also promoted the Eagle Fighting Championship, with its latest event taking place last weekend.
