UFC chief Dana White had to stop Conor McGregor placing $3million bet
Dana White once had to stop Conor McGregor from placing a $3million bet on himself in a UFC fight – which eventually saved him a massive pay-out.
McGregor has enjoyed one of the most successful UFC careers of all time since bursting onto the scene in 2013, becoming the first fighter in the company’s history to hold titles in two weight divisions simultaneously.
The Irishman’s emphatic 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo in 2015 catapulted him to superstardom, but before that defining victory he first had to get past Chad Mendes.
Mendes filled in on two weeks’ notice when his clash with Aldo was initially postponed, and McGregor was so confident that he proposed a bet to White.
The UFC president said on the Jim Rome Show: “You want to know how confident this kid is? I can’t even believe I’m going to say this, but, he told Lorenzo and I the other day ‘I’ll bet you $3 million I knock him out in the second round.’
“I like to bet, I don’t know if I’m that willing to take that bet.
“When I tell you how extremely confident this guy is in himself, it’s fascinating.
“He is a very unique, fascinating person to listen to. Fun to listen to, and fun to watch.”
White’s decision to turn down the wager with McGregor was an inspired one, as the Notorious indeed knocked Mendes out inside two rounds.

He then went on to stop Aldo, who was universally recognised as the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter on the planet at the time, in one of the most astonishing UFC bouts ever.
That victory propelled him to the sport’s summit, only for Nate Diaz to bring him crashing back down to earth by forcing him to submit in their memorable clash at UFC 196.
McGregor got his revenge five months later at UFC 202, nevertheless, before becoming a two-weight champion by toppling Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 three months later.
