Matt Rowell’s hilarious blunder leaves commentators in stitches

Matt Rowell’s return to the AFL has been far from ideal with the Gold Coast Suns star sparking bizarre scenes before kick-off at Optus Stadium.

Rowell’s return wasn’t enough to spark his team to a victory however, with Fremantle winning 11.10 (76) to 6.13 (49) in a snoozefest of a match.

The 19-year-old Rowell has been a revelation when he is on the field, tearing up the midfield and living up to his billing as the number one draft pick in 2019.

But injuries have haunted the young star with his debut season ruined by a shoulder injury before he was sidelined for nearly three months after a knee injury he picked up in round one.

Having spent a lot of time on the sidelines appeared to have gotten to Rowell though as he appeared to forget where he was playing to start the match.

Having run onto the field, he turned around when he couldn’t remember where he was meant to start.

He ran back to the bench but was told to stay on the field by team staff, before having a look at the magnets to refresh his memory.

It left the commentators in stitches as he ran back onto the field.

“He thought he was starting on the bench, then he was waved back,” Hawks great Jason Dunstall said at quarter time.

“He goes, ‘Well, hang on, give me a look at the whiteboard’, so he goes to the guy with the whiteboard and says, ‘Give me a look at the magnets, oh there’s my name, I’m playing forward!’, which is interesting in itself.

“He hasn’t started in the midfield he’s played that high half-forward role. He only had three possessions in the first quarter but he looks like he’s ready to play in the middle in the second quarter.”

It wasn’t Rowell’s best match however with 14 possessions for the game.
