XFL fires all employees, suspends operations after canceling 2020 season due to coronavirus
An already uncertain future for the XFL is now even murkier.
The upstart football league, which canceled the remainder of its inaugural season due to the coronavirus pandemic, announced in an internal conference call Friday it was suspending operations and laying off its employees, multiple figures within the league said via Twitter.
Upon announcing in March that the league would not complete its 2020 season, commissioner Oliver Luck said the XFL was "committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years."
"This decision has been made with the health and safety of the entire XFL family as our top priority," Luck and president Jeffrey Pollack said in March when announcing the end of the 2020 season.
The eight-team league had completed half of its 10-game regular season before ceasing play.
