Giants to offer Mumford a contract for 2021

Veteran ruckman Shane Mumford is expected to remain on the Giants' list in 2021 with the club set to offer the 34-year-old a new deal as they look to retain him as back-up to be used in case of emergency.

The Giants are on the lookout for a new ruckman after the retirement of Sam Jacobs, who lost form in 2020 after crossing from Adelaide as a free agent, with Melbourne's Braydon Preuss one of several ruckmen being monitored as they look to boost their ruck stocks.

They are waiting on key forward Jeremy Cameron to make a decision on his future while they are also in discussions with young midfielder Jye Caldwell, Jackson Hately and Xavier O'Halloran about their next contracts.

The Giants are increasingly confident that Caldwell will stay despite significant interest from St Kilda while Hately is weighing up whether to return to Adelaide, with the prospect of playing as an inside midfielder attractive.

The Giants have also re-signed Harry Perryman, Jeremy Finlayson and Isaac Cumming in recent weeks, with captain Stephen Coniglio, Lachie Whitfield and Toby Greene on long-term deals.

Veteran Heath Shaw was not offered a new contract at season's end but the club view the situation with Mumford, playing in a specialised position that requires back-up, as different to that of Shaw.
