Andros Townsend ended up with Cristiano Ronaldos shirt despite full-time snub

Cristiano Ronaldo gave Andros Townsend his shirt after Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Everton despite appearing to snub the Toffees star at full-time.

Townsend bagged a vital equaliser for Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday, cancelling out Anthony Martial's first-half opener when he capped a swift counter-attacking move with 25 minutes remaining.

And to rub salt in the wounds for Ronaldo and United, he followed up the goal by imitating the former's famous 'SIU' celebration.

After the draw, Townsend was seen approaching a furious CR7, who appeared to decline his request for a shirt swap before storming down the tunnel.

However, the England winger later revealed that Ronaldo did in fact give him his shirt by posting a photo of it on Instagram.

He wrote the caption: “Nothing but respect to the GOAT.”

Townsend also insisted he was not mocking Ronaldo by performing his trademark celebration.

Do you think Andros Townsend's celebration was disrespectful? Let us know in the comments section below.

“This guy is my idol," he said.

“I was not imitating, it’s just a mark of respect to a guy who influenced my career.

“I grew up watching Cristiano Ronaldo and spent hours on the training pitch trying to execute his techniques.

“Maybe I should have spent a bit longer on the celebration because it wasn’t great.

“But it was out of respect for Cristiano and the way he dedicated himself to football and it is an honour to be on the same field.”

Townsend has made a fine start to his Everton career after being snapped up on a free transfer in the summer, with Saturday's equaliser against United his fifth goal of the campaign.

"It has been tough for me trying to analyse why I haven't been scoring on a regular basis with the quality I have on both feet but I am working on the training field," he added.
