Arsenal have earmarked Antonio Conte to be their next manager if Mikel Arteta is unable to turn things around at the Emirates.

The former Inter Milan boss is out of work following his departure from the Nerazzurri at the end of last season.

The Italian wanted assurances that he could build upon his title-winning squad but due to their financial difficulties, Inter were unable to grant Conte with the required funds.

Instead, the Serie A winners have sold star man Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea in a stunning £97.5 million move, to aid their financial situation.

With Conte still unemployed, the Gunners are keen to make a move for the former Blues boss but only after they give Arteta time to prove himself.

The Telegraph report should Arteta ultimately fail to turn Arsenal’s fortunes around, then the club are likely to make former Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte their first choice to replace him.

The Gunners would need to convince Conte that he would be given the tools, and the money, with which to challenge for trophies at the Emirates and would reject any offer that he felt showed the Gunners are prepared to accept second best.

In the summer, Conte rejected the advances from north London rivals Tottenham due to their unwillingness to meet his demands.

The 52-year-old has previous success in the Premier League, guiding Chelsea to their most recent title in 2017.

But the Arsenal board won't sanction a move for Conte until Arteta is given a fair crack at the whip, which they deem to be until the international break in October at the very earliest.
