Arsenal ‘approach Aguero over transfer’ – and Arteta could have advantage

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Sergio Aguero over a potential free transfer this summer – and Mikel Arteta could hold a key advantage in the race for his signature.

Aguero has alerted several top European clubs by announcing that he will be calling time on his 10-year stay at Manchester City when his contract expires at the end of June.

The Argentina ace has etched his name into City’s history books since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011, with his last-gasp title-winning goal against QPR a year later proving one of the most iconic moments in Premier League history.

He has also produced a club-record return of 257 goals in 384 games for City, meaning there are no shortage of potential suitors this summer.

Manchester United are understood to be eyeing up an audacious move for their rival’s all-time leading goalscorer, while Chelsea, Barcelona and PSG are also in the running.

However, Argentine-based journalist Lucas Scagliola is reporting that Arsenal, too, have thrown their name in the hat by making contact with Aguero.

And Gunners boss Arteta could use his ties with City to beat the likes of United and Chelsea to the 32-year-old in the summer transfer window.

  • Arteta spent two-and-a-half years working as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad before taking the Arsenal job in December 2019, helping City clinch two Premier League titles alongside his fellow Spaniard.

His relationship with Guardiola and Aguero could therefore come in handy as the north London club plot a shock swoop for City’s record marksman.

Arteta is desperate to add another striker to his ranks next season, and with money tight at the Emirates a free move for Aguero would be ideal.

Nevertheless, missing out on Champions League qualification – a realistic possibility given they are nine points adrift of the top four down in ninth – could prove their undoing.
