Arsenal technical director Edu has been backed to sign Leicester star Youri Tielemans as he would be the ideal player for Mikel Arteta’s style of play. Tielemans has emerged as a target for Arsenal, most likely for the summer transfer window. The Belgian has built a reputation at Leicester as one of the most highly-rated midfielders in the Premier League.

Arsenal are in the market for a midfielder this month, with Juventus star Arthur their top target.

Arthur would likely only join the Gunners on a loan deal as they wait to sign longer-term targets.

Goal claimed earlier this month that Tielemans is a player on Arsenal’s radar.

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips believes the 24-year-old is exactly the type of midfielder Arsenal need.

Though he thinks it would cost a lot for Leicester to sell him despite his contract expiring in 18 months’ time.

“He’d be an amazing signing,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“I think he’s an amazing player. He’d walk into most teams in the Premier League.

“The way Arsenal play, he’d suit them. Arteta wants them to play out from the back and Tielemans is very comfortable on the ball.

“It would cost them a lot of money to get him out of Leicester but it’d probably be worth it. He is a signing that they need. They need extra quality in that area.

“I think he’d be a great signing for Arsenal. It’d be a major blow for Leicester.”

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was asked about Tielemans’ future earlier this month.

And he admitted the club must plan for the eventuality of any player leaving the club.

Rodgers said: “You always have to [plan for life without players], that is key. You always have to be looking ahead, that’s important.

“Youri is at an age and at a stage in his contract where he has to ensure he looks at every option.

“I would love it to be here at Leicester, that is natural, but I understand it’s a very short career.

“Once the player is committed, focused and professional it’s never a worry for me.

“With Youri you can see his joy of being here, he loves being here and you have to respect these guys’ careers are short.

“If we are going to lose one we have to be ready for the next one to come in.”
