Arsenal ‘may have to sack Arteta’ as Edu tipped to make decision after Chelsea clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta ‘has lost the dressing room’ and could be sacked sooner, rather than later. That’s the view of former Aston Villa striker turned pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor, who claims the Gunner players are trying to ‘throw him under the bus’.

Arteta’s men were beaten 2-1 by Everton on Saturday, their eighth defeat in just 14 Premier League games.

The result at Goodison Park leaves Arsenal perilously close to the bottom three ahead of a London derby with Chelsea on Boxing Day.

The only sides to have lost more games this season than the Gunners are West Brom and Sheffield United, who currently occupy the bottom two spots.

Arsenal go into the game at the Emirates on a run of four straight defeats at home and Agbonlahor believes the Blues will pile even more misery on the beleagured Spaniard.

And Agbonlahor has questioned how long Arsenal bosses can stick with the under-fire boss with the threat of a relegation looming.

“I just don’t know where Arsenal go from here because Chelsea must be odds-on to beat Arsenal in their next game and then Arsenal will be a couple of points above the relegation zone,” he told talkSPORT.

“When does it start to become embarrassing to keep Arteta? It might come to the stage where they might have to get rid of him.

“If these players don’t start showing a bit of fight then you have to sack a manager, that’s how managers get the chop.

“It’s one thing if you get your tactics wrong but if you can’t get the players working and running for you then your time’s done.”

Arsenal’s technical director Edu has publicly backed Arteta and it is understood Emirates chiefs will continue to do so, in spite of their wretched recent form.

But it has been claimed there is a toxic atmosphere within the dressing room, something that the head coach will have to resolve.

But Agbonlahor added that it may be too late, with a number of players no longer ‘having’ his style.

“I do think he’s lost the changing room. I can tell by Nicolas Pepe’s body language when he came off that he’s not having the manager,” he said.

“Alexandre Lacazette when he’s coming on for 15 minutes, you can tell he’s not having the manager.

“When I look at it I feel sorry for Arteta because he’s come in, done well with the team, he’s won a trophy and now with these results the players aren’t running for him.

“You see him animated on the side, he’s trying to motivate them… he’s trying his best.

“But these players, they’ve done it to previous managers and they’ll do the same to him, they’ll throw him under the bus and wait for the next manager to come along.”
