Arsenal signing Thomas Partey labelled ‘modern day Patrick Vieira’ after £45m transfer

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is a modern day Patrick Vieira, according to former Tottenham star Jamie O’Hara. Partey completed his move to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day. After months of speculation, the Gunners finally activated the 27-year-old’s £45million release clause.

O’Hara is a huge fan of Partey and thinks he can lead Arsenal back into Champions League qualification contention.

And the pundit says there are big similarities to legendary Arsenal captain Vieira.

“You’d have to say yes, he’s fantastic signing,” O’Hara said on talkSPORT.

“This season is obviously crazy with the results already happening and I think Arsenal look like a team that have a philosophy now with Mikel Arteta.

“I think they need a player like him, he was one of the missing pieces on their squad and they’ve addressed it. It’s a brilliant signing, he’s a very good player.

“I watched him when they played against Liverpool at Anfield last season and he was absolutely fantastic, he tore Liverpool apart.

“For me, he looks like a modern day Vieira, and I know that’s a big statement, but he looks the real deal, this guy. He’s a top signing.”

Partey has signed a four-year contract at the Emirates and will wear the No 18 shirt.

And manager Mikel Arteta was delighted following news that the midfielder had completed his move to the Emirates.

“We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad,” Arteta said.

“He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy. He brings a lot of experience from a top club that has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.

“We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game.

“He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system and contributing to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.”

Gunners technical director Edu, who used to play alongside Vieira, believes Partey will be an excellent addition.

“Thomas has all the right attributes to be a top player for Arsenal,” Edu said.

“He is a leader on and off the pitch and he is exactly the kind of player and person we want at the club. We already feel like we know Thomas very well based on the work we have done analysing his performances closely in recent times.

“With his all-round game and positive aggressive style, he will be a brilliant addition to our squad.

“We’ve made a strong start to the season and we want to continue to build on this with Thomas now part of our club.”
