Former Arsenal star Kevin Campbell believes Mikel Arteta’s side should try and tempt Barcelona with a move for Dutch maestro Frenkie de Jong. Xavi’s side have frequently been linked with a move for former Gunners’ captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as they are in desperate search for a striker.

The Catalans are frighteningly short in the forward areas after summer signing Sergio Aguero was forced to retire having been diagnosed with a Cardiac Arrhythmia.

His retirement means former Newcastle United striker Luuk de Jong is their only natural striker at the club this season.

Amid his recent falling out with Arteta, who stripped him of the Arsenal captaincy, Aubameyang has been heavily courted by the La Liga giants in the run-up to the January transfer window.

And Campbell believes Arsenal should capitalise on this interest and attempt to manufacture a swap deal involving Aubameyang and Frenkie de Jong.

“I would like De Jong, if you don’t mind. I would love to see him at Arsenal,” Campbell said to the Football Insider.

“I cannot see them moving him on because he has been phenomenal for them, he really has.

“He is the one player who really fit into Mikel Arteta’s squad. I think he’d be brilliant beside Thomas Partey.

“Barca want another striker now Aguero has retired. There is room for Aubameyang.

While Barcelona are still struggling beneath the weight of crippling financial difficulties, de Jong is highly regarded at the Nou Camp.

The Dutchman was signed by the club having played an invaluable role in Ajax’s spectacular run to the Champions League semi-final in 2019.

Barcelona secured his services from Ajax in January 2019, when they agreed a £65million deal with Erik Ten Hag’s side.

However, November reports from Spanish outlet El Chringuito claimed the Blaugrana were considering putting the 24-year-old Dutchman up for sale to fund further transfers in January.

Reports claimed Barcelona were tempted to cash in on de Jong, as the recent breakthrough of young midfielder Pedri and Gavi would be able to fill the void departed by him.

Former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has also been linked with a move to Arsenal in January.

Barcelona are desperate to sell the Brazilian, who set them back £142m in the 2018 January transfer window.

Reports from Fichajes, via the Mirror, claim Arteta has already given a ‘resounding yes’ to the prospect of signing the Brazilian, while further reports from Sport have even claimed his agents have travelled to London.

The Gunners are currently in a good spell of form having strengthened their position in the top four by securing their fourth consecutive Premier League victory.
