Aston Villa could bring in Ross Barkley or Ruben Loftus-Cheek before the transfer window closes.
Dean Smith’s side have spent in excess of £70m this summer to add to their £140m expenditure from last year, making their intentions clear having stayed in the Premier League on the final day of the season.
Ollie Watkins and Bertrand Traore have joined in attack with Matty Cash and Emiliano Martinez also coming in, but Smith could look to add to his midfield before the deadline of October 5.
That could see the club approach Chelsea over out-of-favour duo Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but Premier League rules mean that they will only be able to sign one.
The Mail have reported that Villa are interested in a potential loan deal for either Loftus-Cheek or Barkley as they look to strengthen in the middle of the park.
The report adds that Villa had already been rejected by Tammy Abraham earlier in the window, which might have pushed them forward in their interest for then Brentford forward Watkins.
Barkley scored for the Blues in their Carabao Cup win over Barnsley on Wednesday, after which Lampard admitted that he is likely to see some of his playing squad moved on during the next two weeks.
When asked about Loftus-Cheek and Antonio Rudiger, he said: “The situation with both is that they weren’t in the squad.
“I had a similar answer from the other day, they just weren’t in the squad. That is just a choice at the moment.
“Again with the centre-halves I can’t have them all in the squad. I keep getting asked about the size of the squad.
“There might be movement, we know that, but nothing is concrete so don’t read too much into those selections at the minute.
“It will have to be things which are right for the club and individuals and me and in terms of what happens in the next couple of weeks.”

Despite the exit talk the next deal at Chelsea looks to be another incoming one, as the club prepare the announcement of Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Lampard said: “The medical I think is done and complete.
“I want to be a bit careful with that. I don’t want to give absolute confirmation, but possibly over the next 24 hours. It seems like one which is done.”
