Atletico Madrid youth dead at 14 as club mourn loss of Christian Minchola

Atletico Madrid youngster Christian Minchola has tragically lost his life at the age of just 14, the club have announced.

Minchola joined the La Liga giants in the 2013/14 season, when the first team last won the title under Diego Simeone.

Confirming the goalscoring prodigy's untimely death, the club wrote: "Atletico de Madrid is mourning the passing of our U14 player Christian Minchola.

"We join in the grief of his family, teammates and friends. May he rest in peace."

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo also expressed his condolences to Minchola's family and friends.

Cerezo added: "We are shocked by the sad news of the death of our player and deeply regret his loss.

"Atletico de Madrid and the entire athletic family will be next to Christian's family and friends in these moments of immense pain”.

Atletico midfielder Koke also paid tribute to the club's young talent, who scored over 50 goals at youth level.

Reacting to the sad news on Twitter, Koke wrote: "Anger and pain at having to say goodbye to Christian Minchola.

"Life is very unfair. Proud that you have worn this shirt. Much support to colleagues, family and friends. Rest in peace."

The course of death currently remains unknown.
