Bacary Sagna defends ‘amazing’ Alexandre Lacazette from Arsenal fans’ criticism

Former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has launched a staunch defence of 'amazing' Gunners striker Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette has copped some criticism from the Emirates faithful for his displays this season, managing just seven goals in 20 Premier League outings so far.

He was voted Arsenal's player of the year in 2018-19 but has failed to earn the same plaudits this term with the Londoners sitting ninth in the Premier League and out of Europe.

But Sagna insists the Frenchman does a lot of work that goes unnoticed, hailing his 'vita' contributions to the success of strike partner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

“Laca is vital,” Sagna told Goal. “He is the type of player who gives everything for the team.

"Of course you always see the one scoring the goals, like Aubameyang – who is a goalscoring machine – but the amount of work Laca puts in is amazing.

“The way he holds the ball, the way he fights for the ball, the way he presses the defence. This is invisible work that not everyone will see. But for Arsenal ’s system and the way they want to play, he is amazing.”

Lacazette has gone over a year without finding the net away from the Emirates, and some fans have questioned the decision to play Aubameyang on the left to accommodate Lacazette as a central striker.

But Sagna insists there is a lot more than just goals to Lacazette's play.
