Barca can’t match Messi offers from other clubs admits presidential candidate

Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta concedes Lionel Messi could earn more if he opts for a Nou Camp exit in the summer.

The Argentine almost quit the Catalans last summer before deciding to stay.

Expectations are however that he will seek pastures new once the current season ends bringing to an end a two-decade relationship with the club.

Barcelona are preparing a fresh offer as they aim to retain their talisman.

But Laporta, who previously led the Spanish side when they conquered all under Pep Guardiola, is not sure they can match what other suitors will offer Messi as the club struggle financially.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner is not solely focused on the money offered to him.

Messi has been vocal about his pursuit of a fifth Champions League and Laporta believes this will be a major factor in his decision.

"We will use all our skills to keep Messi with us," Laporta told  Radio MARCA

"Leo is not only focused about money. It will be a good economic proposal, but we will not reach what other clubs can offer.

"I have a very good relationship with Leo. He wants Barcelona. I am convinced that he is looking forward to a proposal from the new president.

"It is going to be based mainly on a competitive squad that can win the Champions League. If I make this proposal, I will fulfil it; I am lucky to have Leo's credibility.

"Now is not the time to talk about Messi, and for that I have to be president."

Messi will be free to seek a new employer from January with the likes of PSG and Manchester City linked with him.

Both clubs are heavily backed and could afford the move should the Argentine be willing.

Global stars like Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo have moved in recent seasons, but Laporta sees Messi's case as an rare one given his affiliation to Barcelona.

"Leo's case is singular. He would be one of the few players like Pele who has only played for one team," he added.
