- It comes as a big blow for the English sides, who are keen to sign defenders
Bayern Munich have confirmed that they have reached a £38.5million agreement to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.
The Bundesliga champions’ chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed earlier this month that they were battling Liverpool and Chelsea to sign the French defender.
But the German side have dealt a severe blow to the Premier League duo by confirming the signing of the 22-year-old France international – who has agreed a five-year deal at the Allianz Arena – ahead of next season.

‘I can confirm and we are very happy about that at FC Bayern,’ Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic told BILD after they activated the release clause in Upamecano’s contract.
‘We had very good, intensive and professional discussions with Dayot and his agent Volker Struth for several months.
‘We knew we had very tough competition. Upamecano is a young player, 22, whose qualities are already exceptionally developed.
‘I was always convinced that we had with a good concept. We presented him with our vision of his career at FC Bayern.

European champions Bayern had earmarked him as their top target to replace David Alaba
‘During the past week I spoke to everyone involved again. At the end of a long process, the player, his family and his management were convinced that FC Bayern was the right partner for them.’
European champions Bayern had earmarked the 22-year-old as their top target to replace David Alaba, who is set to leave on a free transfer.
But it leaves both Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp in a predicament and looking for alternatives this summer as both Chelsea and Liverpool look to strength at the back.
New Chelsea boss Tuchel is reportedly plotting a defensive overhaul at Stamford Bridge and Upamecano was one of the moves lined up during the next transfer window.

Manchester United have also been admirers but have turned their attention to Ibrahima Konate
Klopp is also an admirer of the 22-year-old and reportedly saw the France defender as a natural partner for imperious Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.
Manchester United have also been admirers of Upamecano, but their attention more recently has cooled and they appear to have turned their attention to the Frenchman’s club partner Ibrahima Konate.
Upamecano’s impressive performances for his current club RB Leipzig have made him one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe.
The 22-year-old has been a key figure in Julian Nagelsmann’s side and helped the club reach the Champions League semi-finals and finish third in the Bundesliga last season.
Leipzig have reportedly already identified their replacement, with Strasbourg’s 20-year-old defender Mohamed Simakan the favourite to take the place of Upamecano in a £15m move.
