Borussia Dortmund reportedly plan to almost double Erling Haaland’s salary in a bid to keep him at the club until 2023. The striker is set to be one of the hottest properties of next summer’s transfer window, with Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City expected to be among the clubs keen to prise him away from the Bundesliga.

Haaland has continued his incredible form for Dortmund this season, having already fired 11 goals in all competitions this season despite missing the last three games with a muscle injury.

That takes the 21-year-old’s tally to 68 in 67 games since he joined the German giants for just £17million from RB Salzburg in January 2020.

United were also interested in the Norway striker back then and are expected to renew their pursuit next summer, but could face competition from neighbours City – while Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been linked with him at various times.

But Dortmund plan to thwart his suitors by offering to nearly double his paypacket, according to reports from Germany.

That’s according to journalist Christian Falk of German publication BILD, who wrote on Twitter that the Bundesliga club want to raise his annual salary from €8m (£6.8m) to €15m (£12.7m).

Dortmund stood firm on their determination to keep Haaland for another season this summer, but will face a battle to hold on to him next year when a release clause means he will available for between £64m and £84m.

His goals so far this season have helped fire the club to third place in the German top flight, one point behind leaders Bayern Munich, while he also scored the winner in their Champions League winner over Besiktas, before missing the victory over Sporting Lisbon through injury.

Haaland will be on United’s radar next summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side expected to target a young centre-forward to join Cristiano Ronaldo in a star-studded strike force.

He is also expected to be a target for City, whose need for a centre-forward was laid bare in last week’s defeat to Paris Saint-German when they dominated Mauricio Pochettino’s side but were unable to capitalise on their chances.

Liverpool have also been urged to join the race for the hotshot – with their former player and Haaland’s compatriot John Arne Riise believing he would be ideal for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And Riise warned that City would be almost “unbeatable” if they were allowed to sign the striker.

“Obviously I would love to have him at Liverpool because he’s an unbelievable player,” Riise told Goal.

“He’s in great form, and I think he would suit Klopp’s style of football.

“I also think he would love Liverpool as a club.

“But if City got him, wow! You talk about unbeatable teams, then that would be close!

“Whoever gets Haaland, whether it’s next season or whatever, is going to be an unbelievably strong team for many years to come.”
