Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is refusing to budge and change his tactics to suit Romelu Lukaku after his controversial outburst. The Blues coach also opened up over Antonio Conte’s formation that was successful at Inter Milan.
Chelsea star Lukaku will not get his wish after an explosive interview where he said he was unhappy at the club and the tactics he has had to get used to.
While speaking to Sky Italia, the striker also said he regretted his exit from Inter Milan and is desperate to return there one day.
It caused fury within the Chelsea fanbase with many demanding that the 28-year-old be allowed to leave.
And while he will not be sold this month, Tuchel was also incensed by Lukaku’s comments and he was dropped from the squad to face Liverpool on Sunday.
On Tuesday night, the Belgium international apologised in a five-minute video on Chelsea’s website and he looks set to be reinstated against Tottenham this evening when they face them in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash.
However, Tuchel will not be changing his tactics anytime soon to appease one player and insisted it was up to Lukaku to fit his system.
He said: “Of course, first choice is also about what is possible and what is not possible, and what is a good fit, so it was a perfect fit – and it still is.
“I don’t think you can assume we spent this amount of money and we bring all this effort having major doubts or second thoughts or having him on the list in place number four.
“We have a certain formation. It’s more about principles of how we play. I feel he is impatient. He wants to be involved more.
“But in every transfer there is a change of playing style. He is not the first player to take some time. It’s our job to bring out the best in him.
“This is what we do for every player, this does not change if a player is expensive or is a free agent.”
While it might take some time for Lukaku to earn the trust back from Chelsea fans, the Belgian played his best football under his new club’s opponent tonight.
With Conte, the two led Inter Milan to their first Serie A title in 10 years.
But Tuchel has insisted that Chelsea cannot replicate the Italian’s tactics – no matter how much Lukaku would love to.
He added: “We cannot just play like Inter played and hope that will bring the best out of Romelu.
“Antonio Conte played 3-4-3 at Chelsea. At Inter he played 3-5-2. Obviously he is adapting to his players and implementing his ideas, and this is what I do too.”
