Andreas Christensen is on the verge of signing a new bumper contract at Chelsea, despite initially being offered a pay cut to remain at Stamford Bridge. The 25-year-old’s form in recent months has seen him become a crucial member of Thomas Tuchel’s thriving squad.

This season, Christensen has started four of Chelsea’s five Premier League games and their Champions League opener against Zenit St. Petersburg.

His impressive run of performances has kept Thiago Silva out of Tuchel’s side for most of the 2021/22 campaign so far.

He most notably earned plaudits for his display in Chelsea’s hard-fought 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, holding out for a point with 10 men for 45 minutes.

He’s now set to be handed a new Blues deal following a change of heart and a subsequent breakthrough in talks.

According to The Sun, Chelsea initially offered Christensen a salary lower than his current £78,000-a-week before his resurgence.

Whilst he was a sporadic part of Tuchel’s plans, the European champions didn’t deem him worthy of an upper-echelon salary.

But now he’s a first-team regular, Christensen will put pen to paper on an improved contract worth around £120,000-a-week once the finer details are settled.

The Denmark international is being rewarded for his meteoric rise from being on the fringes of Tuchel’s squad to a stalwart of his system.

After Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Tuchel heaped praise on Christensen for his excellent early season form.

He said: “Andreas has been very strong since day one, can play in all three positions in the defence, and he plays with a lot of confidence.

“In the beginning, I had the feeling it was a bit of push to believe in himself and impose himself and trust in his quality because he has everything that we need in these positions.

“Again, a very strong performance. You can see it in the minutes. We rely fully on him and he’s doing very, very good so far and it is everybody’s target that he continues like this.”

Christensen has helped Chelsea to the Premier League summit after five games, level on points with Liverpool and Manchester United.

The great Dane could face his toughest test of the campaign yet when champions Manchester City visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Another win for Tuchel’s men would arguably cement them as title favourites amid an impressive start.
