Chelsea set for £13.5million transfer windfall with sale of unwanted midfielder

Chelsea appear to be on the verge of selling midfielder Mario Pasalic to Serie A side Atalanta in a deal worth around €15m (£13.5m).

Pasalic made the move to Stamford Bridge from Hajduk Split in 2014 but has never made an appearance for the club, going on loan spells to five different clubs including Monaco, Milan and Spartak Moscow.

He has spent the last two seasons on loan at Atalanta where he has largely impressed, making 74 appearances in all competitions and scoring 15 goals.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano the Italian club are closing in on a deal to make the move permanent.

He tweeted on Wednesday afternoon: "Atalanta are going to buy the Croatian midfielder Mario Pasalic from Chelsea for €15m on next summer."

Atalanta are in a good position to qualify for the Champions League for the second season in a row, and they currently sit in fourth place in Serie A, three points above Roma with a game in hand.

Therefore they should be in a financial position to afford the fee for Pasalic even with the ongoing difficulties with regard to the coronavirus crisis.

They also qualified for the quarter finals of this season's Champions League following an 8-4 aggregate win over Valencia in the last-16, and it remains to be seen whether they will be able to complete the competition, with talks currently ongoing to try to complete the competition, possibly by playing the remaining stages in a single venue.

Overall Pasalic will be remembered as a huge flop by Chelsea, although considering he only cost them £3m initially they will actually be making around a £10m profit on the player.

It may free up funds for future signings, with the likes of Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell being strongly linked with a move to west London.
