Chelsea suffer setback as new signing returns to Cobham after international duty injury

Chelsea have suffered a major blow after new £22million signing Edouard Mendy was forced to return to Cobham from international duty with Senegal after suffering an injury. Mendy has only made one appearance after signing from Rennes.

Mendy was brought to Chelsea to act as competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga, and instantly took his place in the first XI last weekend.

The 27-year-old started against Crystal Palace and kept a clean sheet in an impressive 4-0 win for the Blues.

He was expected to keep his place going forward, due to Lampard’s distrust in Arrizabalaga.

However, before he was able to play for Senegal this week, it was confirmed he had to return to England after suffering an injury.

Mendy suffered a thigh injury and was examined by medical professionals in Rabat, but it was decided he could play no further role during the current international break.

That means he’ll miss games against Morocco tonight, as well as next Tuesday’s game against Mauritania.

He now faces a race against time to return to the side before Chelsea’s first post-international break game, which will come against Southampton next Saturday.

In a statement, the Senegalese Football Federation confirmed Mendy would undergo further examinations while back at Chelsea.

The statement read, per Goal: “The Senegalese Football Federation announces the goalkeeper of the National Selection Edouard Mendy sustained an injury to the right thigh that occurred during the training session on Wednesday, October 07, 2020 and has undergone a medical examination at the hospital in Rabat.

“Edouard Mendy has also left the group this afternoon to return to his Club (Chelsea) where he will undergo further examinations.

“The Senegalese Football Federation wishes him a speedy recovery.

“He will be replaced by the young goalkeeper of the U20 national team, Boubacar Fall, who was regrouping in Toubab Dialao and who moved to Rabat in the early evening.”

Mendy’s injury could inact a return to the first-team for Arrizabalaga after an impressive showing for Spain.

The 25-year-old kept a clean sheet against Portugal on Wednesday night and looked impressive.

After the game, he appeared to send Lampard a message of intent that he wouldn’t be giving up his spot in the team any time soon.

He said: “I’ve felt confidence, at ease [with the national side].

“I think it was a good game and I’m happy with the confidence of the coach. When I’m needed to help on the pitch, I try to do the best possible.”
