Chelsea team news: Expected 4-2-3-1 vs Southampton – Pulisic starts as Ziyech returns

Chelsea will look to continue their winning ways against Southampton this afternoon having secured a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace just before the international break. But who will be in Frank Lampard’s side to face the Saints?

Chelsea are set to be boosted in attack with two players set to return to their starting line up to face Southampton.

Lampard has ruled out a number of players, but hinted that Christian Pulisic will start, while Hakim Ziyech will have to settle for a place on the bench.

Edourard Mendy and Thiago Silva are amongst those who won’t be in action due to their responsibilities during the international break.

“Mendy won’t be fit for this game but we hope he won’t be out for too long,” Lampard said in his pre-match press conference.

“Thiago Silva after his trip [with the Brazil national team], is not in the squad. He’s not unfit but he’s not ready to play in the weekend’s game due to the travelling he’s done.

“Ben Chilwell is in the squad. He’s got over some of the feelings with the injury he has had for a while that took him out of England squad, so he’s available for tomorrow.

“Christian Pulisic is in the squad, he’s fit and ready, and Hakim Ziyech is also in the squad. He’s not fit to start but is fit enough to participate in some way, we hope.”

Lampard refused to comment on who would be replacing Mendy in goal, so it’s anyone’s guess who will be between the sticks.

Chilwell is set to continue at left-back, with Reece James on the right, and Kurt Zouma partnering Andreas Christensen in the middle.

In holding midfield, Lampard would have been pleased to see N’Golo Kante and Jorginho strike up a partnership, and they should continue.

Kai Havertz will spearhead the attacking-midfield, with Pulisic and Timo Werner either side, leaving Tammy Abraham to lead the line again.

Predicted Chelsea XI: Kepa, Chilwell, Zouma, Christensen, James, Kante, Jorginho, Havertz, Pulisic, Werner, Abraham.
