Diego Maradona fans told to "get over it" and accept Lionel Messi is better

Diego Maradona fans “must get over” the fact that Lionel Messi is a better player than his compatriot ever was.

That is the view of former Italy international Antonio Cassano, who claims Messi has much more longevity than the former Napoli star.

Both Argentine players are often spoken out by many as being in the conversation to be called the greatest ever to have played the game.

Along with Pele and Cristiano Ronaldo, both can certainly stake a claim to do so, but the debate will always rage on.

Maradona won a World Cup with Argentina basically on his own but never had the European honours and goals stats of Messi.

Former Roma striker Cassano reckons it is a no brainer to call Messi a better player than Maradona, however.

“Maradona did something never seen before for 4-5 years, but Messi has been doing the same things for 15 years,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“He’s scored 710 goals and made 300 assists. When he plays, his team are already 1-0 up.

“The Maradona fans must get over it. There’s someone who ousted him.”

Indeed, Messi has been playing at the top level now for more than 15 years with Barcelona.

In that time he has won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League titles, and six Ballon d’Or awards.

Maradona set the Mexico ’82 World Cup alight and led Napoli to their first ever Serie A title.

While there will never be any definitive answer to the question of who is better, it is still a fun debate to have.

Pele and Cristiano Ronaldo also fall into the debate and both can state their claim to be the greatest too.
