Donny van de Beek agent slams "bad news" arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo to Man Utd

The agent of Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has slammed the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo as bad news for his client's future at Old Trafford.

Van de Beek has found game time hard to come by since joining the Red Devils from Ajax last summer, regularly finding himself on the bench.

In all, he has made just four Premier League starts for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side – a disappointing return for a player who cost £35million and earned rave reviews during his time in the Eredivisie.

And the return of Portuguese superstar Ronaldo for a second spell with United looks likely to bump him even further down the pecking order.

United sealed the sensational return of the 36-year-old last week for an initial £12.85million fee after he decided to quit Juventus.

Van de Beek's agent Guido Albers believes the return of Ronaldo could spell bad news for his client, who almost sealed a move away from Old Trafford on Deadline Day.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport in Holland, he said: "Cristiano arrived on Friday which we knew was bad news for us.

"[Paul] Pogba plays on the left, and with Cristiano's arrival it means another extra player in midfield with Pogba moving away from the left.

"We had conversations with Solskjaer and the board. We took the initiative to find a club and our search ended up at Everton. We opened talks with Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri.

"On Monday night [prior to deadline day] we received a call from Solskjaer and the club who told us that a transfer was out of the question and that he had to report himself to training the next morning."

Van de Beek will remain at Old Trafford for another season, but is unclear how much game time he can expect to receive.

The Dutchman featured 36 times in all competition last term, following his move from Ajax, but the majority of them came from the bench.

It's difficult to see how Van de Beek can break into such a well-stocked midfield, but Albers still has plenty of faith in his client.

He said: "The perspective now is that we stated that Donny is not a Carabao Cup player, or FA Cup player, or to play only in European games. Donny went to England to play in the Premier League.

"The way the conversation went this time [with Solskjaer] compared to last summer… things are much more clear now. I have full expectations that Donny will get his chance now.

"Donny worked extremely hard in the summer. He only had seven days off. The rest of the summer he trained to become top fit. He is totally ready."

Ronaldo, meanwhile, is set to make his second Manchester United debut in Saturday's Premier League match against Newcastle.
