Edinson Cavani pictured in Man Utd kit for first time as he trains at home

Manchester United fans got a first glimpse of new arrival Edinson Cavani in their kit on Thursday morning as the veteran striker posted a video of himself working on his fitness at home.

The 33-year-old completed a free transfer to Old Trafford on deadline day and is clearly raring to go with the Red Devils, having not played football in around seven months.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to strengthen his attacking options for the 2020/21 campaign and United turned their attentions to Cavani once it became clear their pursuit of number one target, Jadon Sancho, had failed this summer.

The Uruguayan, PSG’s all-time top scorer 200 goals in 301 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants, has signed a one-year deal at the Theatre of Dreams but will have to wait to make his debut for his new club.

Most new signings in the Premier League have been able to train and play with their new team-mates immediately, but this is not the case for Cavani given he’s not been part of a secure bubble and has been mixing with the general population in Paris.

This means Cavani is set to miss United’s trip to Newcastle after the international break – but it hasn’t stopped him putting in the hard yards at home after jetting into Manchester from the French capital.

‘The clock does not stop,’ the forward posted on his Instagram page with a video showing him running on a treadmill in United’s training gear.

Cavani has been given the No.7 shirt for the new campaign and the attacker says he’s honoured to take over such an iconic number which has been worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.

‘It will give me great pride to wear the No 7 shirt for Manchester United,’ he told ESPN.

‘Now I am going to prepare for this responsibility, do my best to be ready and enjoy it and I hope to make my mark at Manchester United.

‘I have two years of a contract with Manchester United. I want to give it my all here. I feel good.’

On Cavani’s move, Solskjaer said: ‘Edinson is an experienced ultimate professional who always gives everything for his team.

‘His goalscoring record for club and country is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his calibre.

‘He’ll bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he’ll bring goals.

‘He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies at almost every club he has played for, and he still has so much more to give at the highest level.’

The Norwegian believes Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood will all benefit from the arrival of one of Europe’s top strikers of the last decade.

‘The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top goalscorers over the last ten years is fantastic and it will really benefit them going forward,’ he added.

‘Edinson knows exactly what it takes to succeed and we are all looking forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.’
