England squad: Phil Foden returns but no place for Mason Greenwood ahead of Nations League

Phil Foden has been recalled to the England senior squad ahead of the forthcoming November internationals but there is no place for Mason Greenwood.

Foden and Greenwood were sent home from England’s September camp by manager Gareth Southgate due to breaching coronavirus protocols by liaising with two women at the team’s hotel in Reykjavik.

Southgate left the pair out of last month’s internationals but left the door open for their return at a later date. Foden has now won his place back for the friendly against the Republic of Ireland and Nations League meetings with Belgium and Iceland.

Greenwood has missed out on a spot in Southgate’s 29-man squad, however, with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin retained as one of seven forwards following his debut goal in the friendly win against Wales last month.

“They don’t come as a pair, they are individual players with their own strengths and individual talents,” Southgate said on Foden and Greenwood.

“We are looking at the balance of the squad positionally firstly. Phil has had a lot of football with his club most recently and Mason has had less game time with United.

“I have had a good chat with [United manager] Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] about his development and I feel it is better for him to stay at the club at the moment, to develop over the next few months.

“But they are both available, there was no carryover from September, that is done. Both are available for selection and are going to be very good players.”

Reece James is included despite being suspended for the two competitive Nations League fixtures but Kalvin Phillips and Danny Ings are absent through injury.

Jack Grealish keeps his place following his excellent form for Aston Villa but there is no room for Leicester’s James Maddison, while Newcastle’s top scorer Callum Wilson also misses out.
