Everton could be on the verge of dealing a major transfer blow to Chelsea inadvertently. Aurelien Tchouameni is a top target of the Blues but is also wanted by Manchester United, while Donny van de Beek looks to leave.
Chelsea could lose out to United in their fight to sign Tchouameni either this January or in the summer with the midfielder heavily linked.
Both clubs were interested in the Monaco ace over the last transfer window with their midfields in need of bolstering.
But finding room for the 21-year-old has proved difficult with the two Premier League titans already owning several in the same position.
Chelsea have Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley and Saul Niguez as back-up options.
Whereas United have Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred combination of Fred and Scott McTominay, backed up by Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Van de Beek.
However, the latter appears to be on his way out and a move to Everton could be revived after a transfer was blocked on deadline day in the summer.
Van de Beek has had a tough time since moving to Old Trafford in 2020 and that has little chance of changing anytime soon.
Solskjaer does not appear to trust the Dutchman and he has made just one appearance in the Premier League this season – a six-minute cameo against Newcastle.
Everton signing the midfielder would allow the Red Devils space to bring in a new player – Tchouameni – with the club making the position a priority in the summer.
Several had been linked, including West Ham star Declan Rice and Leeds ace Kalvin Phillips but the France international would be the cheapest of the three.
Fresh from winning the Nations League, Tchouameni’s flair has been compared to Pogba’s while also having the positional awareness to play in a midfield pivot.
However, a move to Old Trafford would be a major sting to Chelsea – who have been eyeing the youngster for a couple of years now.
Despite Thomas Tuchel having a number of options to choose from, the central midfield pivot could be the most important in his three-at-the-back system.
Players picked must have supreme mental awareness and physical prowess to cope with the demands both defending and attacking.
The signing of Saul from Atletico, a player who is renowned for his intense work-rate under Diego Simeone, has struggled – epitomising that this is no easy nut to crack while Jorginho, Kante and Kovacic appear to have mastered the role.
Nevertheless, Tchouameni has been seen as a natural successor to fill the gaps – with Jorginho and Kante entering the 30s – but United signing him would be a double blow having lost a potential midfield star while Old Trafford could gain a superstar.
