Fenerbahce’s old stance on Ozil suggests transfer from Arsenal nearly done
Mesut Ozil's seemingly impending switch to Fenerbahce was being talked up by a member of the club's congress one month ago, as the Germany international stands on the verge of a move to Istanbul.
Reports in Turkey claim that Ozil will soon sign a three-and-a-half year deal that will bring an end to his time at Arsenal, for whom he hasn't played since March.
Mikel Arteta failed to name Ozil in his squads for either the Premier League or Europa League this season, and the former Real Madrid man has spoken out about his exile on social media.
It has long been claimed that Ozil will see out the final six months of his contract at Arsenal before leaving on a free transfer in the summer, but he now seems set to turn his back on the Gunners for good.
Fenerbahce – the club Ozil supported as a boy – have frequently been suggested as a possible destination for the playmaker, but until last month it was thought that the Istanbul giants didn't have the finances available to pull off such a deal.
However, eyebrows were raised in December when Murat Zorlu, a member of the club's congress, talked up the rumours, and added that he expected the club to sign Ozil in the new year.
"A source, who’s very well connected to the club, has told me that Mesut Ozil is likely to become a Fenerbahce player during the next transfer window," Zorlu told Sport Digitale.
"I would say 90 per cent he will join us in one month."
Those claims now seem to have been given credence by the latest reports, although it remains to be seen whether Ozil completes the move.
