Fergie twice turned down England job – and Man Utd icon has no regrets
Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson twice turned down the chance to become England manager while in charge of the Red Devils.
The 79-year-old had a glittering career at Old Trafford winning 13 Premier League titles and turning United into the top dogs of English football.
Ferguson is widely regarded as the greatest manager of the Premier League era.
But there's one job the proud Glaswegian could never have taken – the role of England manager. Especially after taking temporary charge of Scotland.
Following the death of Jock Stein, Ferguson, who was the assistant at the time, was appointed as interim manager and lead Scotland to the 1986 World Cup in Stein's absence.
The vociferous Scotsman revealed he had further opportunities to go into international management but heading up the England national team was out of the question: "There's no way I could have taken the job," said Ferguson, speaking at the launch of his autobiography via Sky Sports.
"The first time was actually the Scots lad, from the post office, what's his name? Jose. Jose was the first one
"And the second time they approached Martin Edwards and I told Martin, just forget it. I'm not interested."

"But there's no way I could have managed England. Absolutely no way. Not in a million years could I have managed England.
"Think of me going back to Scotland. Dear me."
