Gary Neville bombarded by "weird Messi fans" after making Ronaldo GOAT claim
Gary Neville insists he's received some strange replies on Twitter after weighing in on the Cristiano Ronaldo versus Lionel Messi debate on Monday Night Football.
The Sky Sports Pundit is a firm of his former teammate, labelling him as the greatest player of all time having watched Ronaldo train and play during their time together at Manchester United.
During the programme, Neville referenced the five-time Ballon d'Or winner as "the best poacher now in world football" due to his "outrageous" record in front of goal.
The former United full-back claimed Ronaldo "is the greatest football player that has ever lived."
It was an opinion that wasn't shared by fellow pundit Jamie Carragher who stated Neville's comment was "ridiculous".
Carragher an avid fan of Lionel Messi highlights the Argentine as the greatest of all time as "Messi can do things that we've never seen before."
The heated debate went out on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football programme following the conclusion of Everton's 3-1 win over Burnley.
Do you agree with Neville that Ronaldo is "the greatest football player that has ever lived?" Let us know in the comments section.
But now Neville has taken to Twitter to defend himself saying that both players deserve a huge amount of respect for all they have achieved in the game:
"You can choose Messi, you can also choose Ronaldo," tweeted the player turned pundit.
"Neither opinion can be seen as wrong due to them bot(h) achieving greatness and the comparisons in stats so similar.
"What style of football you like can be the difference. However, I’ve got some weird Messi fans on my timeline!"
Since the tweet was published Neville has received more than 2,000 replies with the debate still rumbling on over who is the greatest footballer: Messi or Ronaldo?
But rather surprisingly leading the protest against Neville and Ronaldo was former England cricketer Kevin Pieterson, who replied: "I'm #TeamMessi."
