Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood must be part of the England squad for this summer’s European Championships, according to former Three Lions manager Glenn Hoddle. Greenwood scored and assisted off the bench in United’s 3-1 win over Hoddle’s former team Tottenham on Sunday.

Greenwood has one cap for the senior England side, making his debut last September in the win over Iceland.

However, the 19-year-old was then axed from the squad after breaking quarantine guidelines following the match.

Greenwood has not been in Gareth Southgate’s squad since the incident.

But Hoddle believes there is a “specialised” role for the teenager this summer.

“For me he’s got to be in the England squad this boy, because he does what he’s done today,” Hoddle told Premier League Productions.

“When you put a sub on, if you need a goal for England in the Euros or United, he creates.

“He creates chances for himself and others, and he’s a finisher.

“I think he might not start but if you want to change the game, make a difference, go on and win the game for us, he’s the man.

“He’s ahead of some other players that might be ahead of him going into the squad.

“But I think there’s a specialised position for him coming off the bench.”

Hoddle’s claim comes a week after United legend Gary Neville included Greenwood in his squad for this summer’s tournament.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said: “If England need a goal, I would bring Greenwood on.

“He’s naturally a better finisher than Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling, even though he doesn’t have the goals of Sterling, and he’s got that quality in tight spaces in and around the box.

“I don’t think there’s a natural replacement for [Harry] Kane, but I think Greenwood’s the only one who can really finish.”

Edinson Cavani was also on the scoresheet in Sunday’s win for United at Spurs.

And Neville believes having an experienced player such as Cavani is vital for Greenwood’s development as a player.

He said on the Gary Neville Podcast: “Mason Greenwood needs another year with Cavani alongside him. He needs someone like that.

“It inspired us as young players having the likes of [Bryan] Robson, [Steve] Bruce, [Eric] Cantona and you see the best players in the world, or who have been the best players in the world, like Cavani, doing his work like that in the 94th minute.”
