Graeme Souness’ warning for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp ahead of summer rebuild

Graeme Souness has warned Liverpool that 'the majority' involved in the club will need to take a look at themselves after a dreadful Premier League title defence.

Jurgen Klopp's men have dramatically declined this season following their first league title in 30 years.

The Reds stormed to the title by 18 points last season, amassing 99 points and leaving the rest of the league in their dust.

But this season has been quite the contrast, with Klopp's side currently 23 points behind champions Manchester City and battling for the European spots.

The Anfield club were left reeling after early injuries to key men Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez and never regained their momentum from last year's incredible campaign.

However, Thursday's 4-2 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford was a reminder of the form supporters were so familiar with last season.

The Reds pounced on United's abject defending to pummel four goals and move a huge step closer to Champions League qualification.

Souness was full of praise for his former club, who can all but secure a top four spot with wins in their three remaining games.

"I thought the other night there were glimpses of them being back to their best," he told Sky Sports.

"The intensity was back in their game and I thought they were fabulous. It was a really good performance under pressure and I'm fancying them now all of a sudden.

But Souness is also aware that Liverpool's levels have dropped enormously since the heights of the 2019/20 season.

The Sky Sports pundit believes most of Klopp's men need to reevaluate after a year of underperforming.

"There's a bit of consistency, people playing with their tails up and how we would expect them to play.

"There's several people in that football club who have to take a look at themselves at the end of the season and say 'did I have a good season'?".

"I think there's a few can say yes but the majority would have to hold their hand up and say no. "
