How Man Utd could line up vs Newcastle amid Pogba struggles and Cavani worry

Manchester United will look to bounce back from their humiliating 6-1 defeat against Tottenham when they go away to Newcastle on Saturday night.

The Red Devils were torn apart by Spurs at Old Trafford before the international break, conceding four first-half goals in a Premier League match for the first time in their history.

Anthony Martial’s sending off, after VAR replays appeared to show him slapping Erik Lamela, played a significant part in their downfall on the day.

As a result, Martial will be unavailable when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side make the trip to St James’ Park as he begins his three-game Premier League ban.

Solskjaer will therefore need to deploy someone else at the pinpoint of his attack, but new signing Edinson Cavani is a major doubt to feature.

Cavani, who completed a free transfer to United on deadline day last week, must now undergo a 14-day self-isolation period in accordance with Government guidelines after arriving in the UK from France.

The Uruguay striker is therefore likely to miss Saturday’s clash with Newcastle, although United officials are expected to raise the issue with authorities to see if they can gain special dispensation for him to play.

If Cavani is ruled out, Solskjaer could deploy Marcus Rashford upfront as opposed to on the left-hand side.

In a 4-2-3-1 setup, Bruno Fernandes is bound to be deployed as a No.10, sandwiched between Mason Greenwood on the right flank and Daniel James over on the left.

Paul Pogba’s form has plummeted in recent weeks, meaning £35million recruit Donny van de Beek could be handed his first start alongside Nemanja Matic in the middle of the park.

Another United star struggling right now is Luke Shaw, so expect another deadline-day signing in £15million Alex Telles to get the nod at left-back, sitting alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly and Harry Maguire in defence.

And despite conceding six against Spurs last time out, David de Gea remains Solskjaer’s No.1 goalkeeper and is likely to keep Dean Henderson out of the side once more.
