Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has been called up by England manager Gareth Southgate for their World Cup qualifying double header after Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips pulled out through injury.

Roma striker Tammy Abraham was added to the 23-man strong squad on Monday to bolster the attack, while Ben Chilwell replaced his injured Chelsea team-mate Reece James.

And now Ward-Prowse has followed them through the door at the England set-up after fellow midfielder Phillips withdrew with a calf issue.

Roma striker Tammy Abraham (L) was added to the 23-man strong squad on Monday to bolster the attack, while Ben Chilwell (R) replaced his injured Chelsea team-mate Reece James.

Phillips sustained the setback in Leeds’ 1-0 win over Watford on Saturday and has decided to pull out of the squad following an assessment.

Ward-Prowse was not included in Southgate’s initial squad but will be keen to add to his eight senior international caps over the coming week.

The 26-year-old went from hero to villain for his club on Saturday as less than 20 minutes after equalising from the penalty spot against Chelsea he was sent off for a bad tackle on Jorginho.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were unable to keep the Blues out with 10 men and fell to a 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Ward-Prowse narrowly missed out on a place in Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad in the summer after a fine season at club level and being involved in the preparations before the 26-man squad was decided.

England are currently four points clear at the top of their World Cup qualifying group with four games to play and travel to Andorra on October 9 before hosting Hungary three days later.
