Salah recently suggested that he would like to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona in Spain
In Carragher’s Telegraph column on Friday, he wrote: ‘Salah’s recent interview feeds that idea his career comes first. His comments about being upset not to be made captain in a dead rubber against Midtjylland underlined it. They were odd. .
‘The timing of the player initiating transfer stories is also strange. My view is it was a message to Liverpool’s owners to offer him a lucrative new deal.
‘Seeing their players being courted by the La Liga clubs would have concerned Liverpool five years ago. Not now. I am not convinced Madrid and Barca can afford Salah. Investing well in excess of £125million on a player who will turn 29 this summer is not good business.’
Salah’s current Liverpool contract runs until the summer of 2023 and reports this week from Goal said that Liverpool are ‘certain’ to offer him an improvement on his current terms in the not too distant future.
His current terms are believed to be close to the £200,000-a-week mark. Salah has won the Premier League and the Champions League in his time at Liverpool, scoring 110 goals in 173 appearances along the way.

Salah could next be in action for Liverpool on December 27 when they take on West Brom
Carragher added: ‘Salah may be one of the most underrated Liverpool players in the club’s history. I know how contentious that sounds. Salah is loved by supporters. He is already a club legend.
But unlike recent idols such as Fernando Torres or Luis Suarez who eclipsed teammates with the acclaim they received despite only winning a League Cup between them at Anfield, Salah excels in a side packed with world class excellence from which fans have a broad choice of favourites.’
This season, Salah has fired in 16 goals in 21 appearances in all competition for Liverpool and will have a chance to add to his tally when his side host West Brom on December 27.
