John Barnes claims Lukaku is summer’s best signing and not Cristiano Ronaldo

John Barnes believes there is one clear standout signing of the summer and it isn't Jack Grealish's move to Manchester City or Cristiano Ronaldo's Old Trafford reunion.

It's been a window like no other: big-money moves, heroes returning home and world-class players leaving on free transfers.

In the eyes of many Ronaldo's Manchester United homecoming was the pinnacle moment, not just of Transfer Deadline Day, but the entire summer.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner and the greatest ever international goalscorer is coming back to the Premier League to where it all began in a £12.5 million move.

But Barnes believes there is one summer signing that eclipses that of Ronaldo's:

"Lukaku is probably the standout signing because Chelsea needed a centre forward," said Barnes, speaking to BonusCodeBets.co.uk

"That was probably the best signing of any.

"As much as a lot of money has been spent, the money is down on previous years because of Covid and the uncertainty around that financially. "

Chelsea were desperate to bring in a forward this summer to ease the pressure on Timo Werner, who struggled massively during his debut season in England.

Following a £53 million transfer from RB Leipzig, Blues fans had high hopes for the German striker.

But just 6 goals in the Premier League last campaign left Thomas Tuchel in no doubt a more reliable frontman was required if Chelsea were to challenge this season.

They had to empty their pockets again to bring in Lukaku; the Belgian forward cost a whopping £97.5 million from Serie A winners Inter Milan but showed his goalscoring pedigree against Arsenal, netting just 15 minutes into his Blues return.

Lukaku may already be proving Barnes right about being the best signing of the summer but the former-Liverpool midfielder was quick to highlight he is looking forward to Ronaldo returning to the Premier League:

"From the point of view of the prodigal son returning home it’s fantastic," said Barnes

"Of course, they’re not getting the Cristiano Ronaldo that they had or that Real Madrid had.

But getting back a talisman and one of the greatest players that ever lived – not so much now because he’s 36 and on the way down – is a good signing for them."
