Jose Mourinho chased Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger during transfer window

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho reportedly chased Chelsea duo Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger during the summer transfer window.

Mourinho was keen to strengthen his defence during the summer with Jan Vertonghen having left north London.

Sergio Reguilon was brought in from Real Madrid while Matt Doherty made the switch from Wolves.

Joe Rodon signed for Spurs late in the window with Mourinho having targeted a number of centre-backs.

The Daily Mail claim Rudiger was on the verge of completing the move after holding positive talks with Mourinho.

He ended up staying at Stamford Bridge, reportedly due to fears over the backlash that could come from Chelsea fans.

French outlet L’Equipe add that Tottenham were also keen on signing Zouma from the Blues and even had an offer rejected.

Mourinho brought Zouma to England, signing him while he was manager at Stamford Bridge back in 2014.

The Tottenham boss insists he is not worried about his current defence, saying after his side conceded a three-goal lead to West Ham: “We have new players.

“We played much better than last season. I can say the same about West Ham.

“Defensively the team is much better than before. Can I say that in all this Premier League that we’re playing, five matches, we concede penalties or free-kicks and only one goal from open play – Danny Ings (against Southampton).

“And this shot was also from the sequence of a free-kick. I can look at that and say, yes a team that plays so well for periods and does the most difficult thing in football – scores goals and we’re scoring a lot of goals – cannot lose two points like we did.”
