Manchester City are reportedly closing in on tying down Kevin De Bruyne to a bumper new contract.
The Belgian playmaker is ‘very close’ to signing a new year five-year deal worth over £300,000-a-week, according to Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano.
It comes after Sportsmail reported in October that City were making strong progress with De Bruyne over signing a new deal, raising the prospect that he will finish his career at the club.
Kevin De Bruyne is closing in on signing a new contract to stay at Manchester City
De Bruyne has become a lynchpin for City under the management of Pep Guardiola
The midfielder is believed to be keen on signing a two-year extension to an existing contract that runs down in 2023.
City had first planned talks with the 29-year-old towards the end of last season but those were pushed back after the Premier League campaign was paused.
City have wanted to reward their bigger stars for showing loyalty towards the club during their legal battle over a two-year Champions League ban imposed by UEFA earlier in the year.
That was subsequently overturned on appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and De Bruyne will become the first to underline his commitment.
De Bruyne has returned two goals in 17 appearances in a difficult season for City
De Bruyne was crowned the PFA Players’ Player of the Year after a stellar 2019-20 campaign
Although he still had two-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal, retaining the Premier League and PFA Player of the Year serves as a significant boost.
Should he stay for the entirety of this contract the Belgium international, who is settled in the North West with his wife and three children, would be 34.
De Bruyne has been at Manchester City for five-and-a-half years now after joining from Wolfsburg in 2015 and has won two Premier League titles, four League Cups and an FA Cup.
He was voted last season’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year after a stellar campaign, but has just two goals in 17 appearances during a difficult 2020-21 so far for Guardiola’s men.
