Klopp looks to Chelsea as Liverpool’s Thiago transfer deal discussed

Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Liverpool are still being limited by financial restrictions in the transfer market, citing Chelsea as an example of a team who clearly aren't.

The Premier League champions have brought in the Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas this summer, although that deal was almost wholly financed by the sale of Dejan Lovren to Zenit Saint Petersburg.

The Reds continue to be linked with a move for the Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, with sources in Germany claiming that a move for the Spanish international is imminent, but they have made it clear that they won't be spending big in the wake of the financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus crisis.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have been able to spend freely this summer, so far bringing in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell, with moves for Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz also mooted.

Werner had been strongly linked to Liverpool, but Klopp says the Reds aren't in a position to spend without strongly considering the ramifications.

When asked about Thiago by Servus TV he said: "There are a lot of interesting players out there but if someone is interesting for us I can’t say right now.

"Due to COVID-19 you have to think five times about what you can and what you can’t do.

"We always have to pay attention to the financial aspect. We don’t know how much money will come in.

"Nobody knows but it seems like some other teams have a more positive outlook on the future… if you look at Chelsea for example [laughs].

"But I am very happy with my team right now. If something transfer related will happen we have to see."

After taking part in their Austria training camp, the Reds are now back in England ahead of the Community Shield against Arsenal at Wembey on Saturday.
