Klopp takes swipe at Southgate over using Alexander-Arnold in midfield
‘Why would you make the best right back in the world a midfielder?’: Jurgen Klopp takes a swipe at Gareth Southgate for moving Trent Alexander-Arnold further forward against Andorra

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes there is little use in playing Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield when he is ‘the best right-back in the world’.
There have long been suggestions that the 22-year-old could move into midfield later in his career and he was deployed in that position by England boss Gareth Southgate for the first half of last weekend’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra.
Alexander-Arnold struggled to make much of an impact at Wembley and was moved into his usual right-back position for the second period.
Jurgen Klopp believes there’s no need to deploy Trent Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder
Klopp stressed that the 22-year-old already plays higher up the pitch as Liverpool’s right-back
Klopp feels that there is no need to convert Alexander-Arnold into a midfielder as he is now playing further forward for Liverpool.
Speaking at his press conference, Klopp said: ‘If you watch our game his position already changed, when it’s possible, there’s no need to make him now a midfielder.
‘It’s a little bit a shame we still talk about this, good players are everywhere. In this game when England are that dominant or we are that dominant Trent could play in midfield. I’d rather the 6 than the 8 but why would you make the best right-back in the world a midfielder?
‘Everybody thinks because he plays 10 yards further up he would be more influential. Being more influential than Trent is really hard. We adapt and we try to use his skillset but he’s doing really well and we have the ball we use him as good as we can.’
Gareth Southgate played Alexander-Arnold in midfield for 45 minutes in the win v Andorra
Out of his 182 appearances for Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has only started in midfield once, against Stoke City in April 2018.
However, whereas he is firmly established as Liverpool’s first-choice right-back, the situation is somewhat different for Alexander-Arnold on the international stage.
Southgate has several other right-back options to consider, with Kyle Walker the current first-choice, while Reece James and Kieran Trippier can also be used there.
Despite his ability, Alexander-Arnold has found it difficult to establish himself as a regular for England and has only made 14 appearances for his country so far having missed Euro 2020 through injury.
After being an unused substitute for the draw with Poland, Alexander-Arnold will return to club action this weekend as Liverpool face Leeds away on Sunday.
