  • Messi’s future is still undecided with the Argentine star possible leaving Barca
  • Koeman also batted away questions about Barca meeting Erling Haaland’s agent

Ronald Koeman has said that Barcelona will do ‘everything we can’ to keep hold of Lionel Messi at the end of the season.

Messi’s future still remains in doubt, although observers say there is possibly cause for optimism among Barca fans as Manchester City’s interest in Messi has cooled and the player seems more committed to the club than in recent times.

Neymar has also reportedly delayed new contract negotiations at PSG over a potential reunion with Messi at the Nou Camp.

Messi’s future remains unresolved with talk of PSG being in the lead to tempt him away

However, Koeman made plain he was taking nothing for granted.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s LaLiga match against Valladolid, he said: ‘It’s (Messi’s future) a very important issue.

‘We are going to do everything we possibly can to ensure that he stays. But right now, what matters is tomorrow’s game. Things regarding the future are up to the president. We just focus on our games.’

More pressing for Koeman, regarding Messi, is the fact that he is one yellow card away from being suspended. If he were to pick it up against Valladolid he would miss El Clasico against Real Madrid next week.

Koeman didn’t comment on Joan Laporta’s meeting with Erling Haaland’s agent last week

But the Barca boss confirmed the Argentine and Frenkie De Jong, who is in the same boat, will both start on Monday evening.

‘We know, the risk is always there, but now isn’t the moment to rest,’ he said. ‘They both know that. We have to take one game at a time and put out our best possible team in every game.’

Koeman was also pressed on Barca president Joan Laporta’s meeting with Erling Haaland’s father and his agent Mino Raiola earlier this week, with talk rife that the Norwegian striker is looking at a move to either Barca or Real Madrid.

‘We used the international break to meet up with the president and discuss the future, but I cannot talk about players who play for other clubs,’ Koeman said.

Asked about the chances of Barcelona signing a top striker this summer, Koeman was equally cagey.

‘I don’t know, it will depend on the board and the president. They are the one who will make a decision based on the club’s finances.’
