Lionel Messi’s father Jorge has written to La Liga regarding his son’s future at Barcelona.
The agent is unsure about the legitimacy of the alleged €700m buy-out clause in his son’s contract, and wants to get clarity amid transfer links to Manchester City.
The 33-year-old is desperate to leave his boyhood club after a falling out with the board and president, but they are standing firm over his current deal.
The Argentina international has another year on his contract with the Catalan giants, but it is also said to include a clause that allows him to choose his own future every summer.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague posted the letter to Twitter on Friday, which was sent directly from Jorge to La Liga bosses, and also sent out publicly.
Balague said: "This is the letter that Jorge Messi just sent to La Liga in which denies La Liga interpretation that the €700m buyout clause is still applicable.
"Jorge insists it is not applicable from the end of last season if the player decides unilaterally to leave FCB."
In response, La Liga have offered another statement, which has insisted that the clause remains valid, and the money must be paid in full before Messi is to leave Barcelona.
The clause in Messi's contract is said to have expired by those at the club who want him to stay, meaning the only way he can leave is if his buy-out minimum of £624m is met.
The date in the contract is June 10, but Messi's father has argued that the extension of the season should have led to an extension of that period.
Their previous statement said: "In compliance with the applicable rule, La Liga will not approve a request to be de-registered as a player with the Spanish football federation, unless the amount in the release clause has been paid."

Jorge headed to Spain to try and reach an agreement earlier this week, and he was met with a huge number of people when he arrived.
"I don't know anything, boys," he said as he squeezed through the crowd on Wednesday.
Having said to El Chiringuito previously: "A future at Barcelona? It is difficult. It would be difficult to stay."
And adding on City’s potential interest: "I haven't talked with Pep. There is nothing yet with City."
