Lehmann recalls Arsene Wenger vs Sir Alex Ferguson fight in Old Trafford tunnel
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has recalled the moment Arsene Wenger squared up to his great rival Sir Alex Ferguson after the infamous 'Battle of Old Trafford'.
The Gunners had grabbed a hard-earned point against reigning champions Manchester United at the Theatre of Dreams – six games into the 2003/4 Premier League season which would see Wenger's 'Invincibles' win the title without losing a game.
Arsenal's unbeaten record almost didn't last past the Old Trafford clash, but they were let off the hook when Ruud van Nistelrooy missed a late chance to win it for United, hitting the crossbar from the penalty spot in injury time.
After Van Nistelrooy' miss the game descended into violence, with all 22 players involved in a brawl on the pitch at the final whistle, before a young Cesc Fabregas famously threw a pizza at legendary United boss Ferguson as the fighting continued in the tunnel.
The drama didn't there, though, as Lehmann recalls he saw Wenger and Ferguson "almost start to fight".
"I remember after that game I wasn’t looking into the eyes of my teammates, I was looking into the eyes of Arsene,’ Lehmann told BeIN Sports.
"He was having Alex Ferguson at a short distance like that [clenches fist].
"He grabbed him and each of them were very angry with each other and almost started to fight with each other.
"It wasn’t about me or the players, it was more about the manager.
"I came in late and I remember that there were two crowds of people confronting each other, and I spilled some of my water onto them, accidentally of course.
"It was funny to watch, I wasn’t involved. You always expect me to be involved but I wasn’t in this situation.
"We were talking (on the Monday at the training ground) but we were waiting for fines to be handed out and of course to United."
The match between the two best sides in English football at the time had been a typically volatile one, featuring seven bookings including two for Gunners midfielder Patrick Vieira.
