Liverpool ‘offered Arsenal ace’ Klopp knows well as solution to injury crisis

Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Arsenal outcast Sokratis Papastathopoulos amid their defensive injury crisis, according to reports.

The Premier League champions lost first-choice centre-back pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries earlier in the campaign, with both men facing a battle to play again this season after damaging knee ligaments.

Joel Matip has also suffered with fitness problems of his own, meaning Jurgen Klopp has often been forced to play youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips at the heart of his defence.

Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have also been used as makeshift centre-backs.

Reports suggest Liverpool are exploring the idea of adding defensive cover in the January transfer window, and journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Sokratis is a potential option.

The 32-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements at Arsenal after being left out of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads in the first half of the season.

And it is believed he has been offered to Liverpool this month with the Gunners looking to clear out the deadwood in their squad.

Sokratis played under Klopp in his time at Borussia Dortmund, but Anfield chiefs are not considering him a serious transfer target just yet.

That is mainly because they are still undecided on whether signing a new centre-back is necessary in January.

However, Romano believes the Greece international could emerge as an option for Liverpool should they set their sights on strengthening defensively.

Sokratis has made 69 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Dortmund in 2018, scoring six goals and playing a part in their FA Cup triumph last season.

But along with Mesut Ozil, he has been frozen out by Arteta this season after failing to earn a place in his squad.

Genoa and Real Betis have also been touted as potential destinations for him this month, while Ozil looks set to seal a move to Fenerbahce.
