Liverpools final day gets even worse with injury blow against Wolves

Liverpool’s devastating final day of the Premier League season got even worse as they suffered a key injury blow against Wolves.

The Reds came agonisingly close to snatching the title from rivals Manchester City in their final league game of the season. Liverpool beat Wolves 3-1 at Anfield, which would have been enough to clinch the Premier League trophy until City launched a historic comeback against Aston Villa to win 3-2 after being 2-0 down.

But alongside narrowly missing out on what would have been a second league title in three seasons for the Reds, Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered another huge blow.

Midfield talisman Thiago Alcantara was forced off the pitch with an injury to his right hamstring at the mid-way point in the match. The Spaniard was replaced by James Milner and conceded a devastated look on his face as he watched the drama unfold on the side-lines.

And while their pursuit of the league is now over, Liverpool have arguably their most important game of the season coming up on Saturday when they take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

According to Sky, Klopp is likely to be without his most creative central-midfielder when he faces former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti's Los Blancos. That comes as a major blow to the Reds’ pursuit of a historic treble, having already had their hopes of a quadruple dashed on Sunday afternoon.

Thiago started against Wolves and in Liverpool's recent FA Cup final win over Chelsea. His spectacular vision and technique set-up Sadio Mane for the equaliser just before his injury, but Klopp will now have to turn to the likes of Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson as alternatives.
